Watching a puppy birth never gets old to me. Dogs instinctively know what to do, and bond instantly with their newborn puppy. Here, Roxanne, the 'Mama' dog has 10 puppies. All 10 were born healthly.
Before having a litter of puppies, it is always important to make sure both the sire and dam are healthy. This includes not only a routine vet check, but also having your dog's eyes and hips checked for genetic diseases. PRA,prgressive retinal atrophy, is a genetic eye disease that can leave your dog blind. Hip dysplasia is a genetic disease that can make it very painful for your dog to walk. Check out the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for more information about hip dysplasia, and the Canine Eye Registration Foundation and Dr. Steve Roberts for more information about genetic eye diseases.
